Maro is a small village 4km from Nerja with a population of approx 2,000. There are many fine bars and restaurants and is home to the famous Nerja Caves. The caves were discovered in 1959 and are one of the most beautiful cave complexes in Europe.
They are considered of great historical importance, nationally, and contain paintings and artifacts dating as far back as 30,000 years. However, the paintings are not on public display and it is possible that they never will be.
One of the caverns has been converted into a concert hall and many concerts are staged there during the summer months.
