Almunecar
Almunecar has a great number of beaches and an ample festive calendar (see below) and a wide range of leisure activities.
Almunecar is regarded as the capital of the Tropical Coast and, compared to the coastal towns of the Costa del Sol, is still relatively underdeveloped. It is located 72km from Granada and 75km from Malaga. Almunecar is traditionally a holiday destination for Spaniards, but is becoming increasingly popular amongst foreigners. Almunecar features a shoreline of unspoiled beaches and idyllic coves, which benefit from Almunecar´s unique sub-tropical temperatures. The Phoenicians, Romans and Moors have all laid claim to Almunecar and their diverse influences are still reflected today in the town's architecture.
The old town of Almunecar is a historical, sightseeing and cultural treasure trove. The cultural heart of the town is centred around the Castle of San Miguel, which is Almunecar´s most important building. The castle has recently undergone extensive restoration and is open daily to visitors. Several important churches and museums also feature in Almunecar´s heritage. The streets are paved with traditional Almunecar cobblestones along with numerous squares, patios and corners, where it is obligatory for residents and visitors alike to stop, relax and chat.
As well as the stunning beaches, Almunecar offers a variety of attractions. Amongst them is the Loro Sexi Bird Park, which is home to more that 1,500 birds representing approximately 120 species including doves, parrots, macaws, swans and ducks. Nearby is the Parque del Majuelo, a pretty botanical garden containing Europe's largest collection of subtropical plants, most of which are from Cuba and Brazil. Almunecar Castle's Pottery is the town's last existing pottery and is located in the grounds of the San Miguel. As well as an interesting tourist attraction, its existence serves to preserve the tradition of Almunecar´s pottery.
