Torrox

  • Historic Interest
  • Inland
  • Tourist Destination
  • Torrox is little over 35 minutes from Malaga and the drive into the surrounding area is pleasant with olive and almond trees being the most popular crop. Agriculture is a large income but tourism is getting larger each year especially with the new hotels being built.
Torrox consists of Torrox Costa and Torrox Pueblo.  Torrox Pueblo is a pretty and charming village with whitewash buildings.  The labyrinth of narrow streets that lead up and out of the main plaza add to the charm of this place and tourism here has not taken off yet, so the charm remains, but this charm has attracted overseas property owners to buy second homes here thus eating away at the charm this place offers.
An afternoon spent wondering the streets of this charming place is recommended and a few places to visit include the the 16th century churches “Iglesia de la Encarnacion” built on the site of the original village mosque and “Iglesia de San Roque”. Other places worth a visit include the “Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves”, “Custom House & Mint” and the 19th century Casa de la cultura.
Torrox pueblo isn’t the prettiest village in the Malaga province, but definitely worth an afternoons time, especially if you have the spent the morning sunbathing on the beaches of nearby Torrox Costa.
Torrox Costa is a change to the resorts such as Fuengirola and Torremolinos in that it has had its first hotel built in 2003, and as such the place isn’t populated with that many tourists.  The tourists that do stay in Torrox Costa are usually staying in one of the apartments that are owned by Spanish or German nationals.  So not having much exposure in the travel brochures means this place retains a very pleasant atmosphere and a cosmopolitan feel.
The coastal area of Torrox stretches 3kms along the promenade “Paseo Maritimo” There aren’t many places of interest In Torrox Costa as it is mainly a beach resort but a stroll along the promenade to the El Faro lighthouse will give you the chance to see the Roman remains that were discovered in the 1970’s.
